Despite a fairly busy week, I’ve managed to stick to my training schedule. Since I’ll be working all weekend, I already got all my miles in this week. I ran: 2 miles tempo on Tuesday, 3.4 miles hills on Wednesday, 5.5 miles long run on Thursday, and 3.3 miles easy this morning before I head to work for a 12 hour ED shift. That makes for a total of 14.2 miles, just above my goal of 14. Excellent.

It’s been a hard day’s night
I’ve been working pretty long hours lately. It’s amazing how quickly you adapt to whatever comes your way. Despite the long hours, I’m actually pretty happy. Of course, I’m writing this after a day off. We’ll see how I feel after my day on call tomorrow…
Now that I only get one day off a week (usually), I really appreciate that day. I got home from work kind of late yesterday, but thankfully was still able to go running because Eddie had waited for me. We got back from our run around 9 pm and then headed over for a tasty sushi dinner at Blue Fin. It was pretty good, although I still prefer the little hole-in-the-wall place we go to in Arlington. By that time, it was close to 11, and I was exhausted. I very happily slept in this morning and didn’t get up until 9:30 am. Of course, I did what I normally do and promptly fell back asleep on the couch after reading Harry Potter for a while. I woke up later when Eddie finally got up, and we had a tasty lunch of veggie burgers and pringles. After that, we walked (despite the stifling heat!) over to Marathon Sports to pick up my new running shoes! I’m obviously very excited about this. My old shoes have almost 500 miles on them. The shoes are excellent. They’re the same kind I always get (Brooks Dyad), but I always love getting a new pair. They feel so soft and squishy.
I spent the afternoon baking cookies (one of my favorite pasttimes) and unpacking while watching the Office. It’s nice to finally have (almost) all of the boxes put away! The place looks great. Then Eddie and I went for a very pretty run around the Freshpond Reservoir. We had a delicious dinner (prepared by Eddie) of chicken with a mushroom cream sauce (made from scratch), greenbean casserole and crusty bread. You can’t say we don’t eat well.
Now I’m relaxing with my sweetie and getting ready to go to sleep since I’m on call tomorrow. Overall, a wonderful day off.
Good times
Eddie and I continue to love our new place. I can’t believe how nice it is to have a yard and a deck (two decks, actually!). After countless hours of searching, we finally found furniture for both our front and back decks today. It’s not that we’re particularly picky about furniture, it’s just that every place we looked had already gotten rid of all their patio furniture for the upcoming fall. I was getting very discouraged and worried that we wouldn’t be able to find anything for this season which would really be a bummer, but I finally found the perfect stuff today at a gardening store near Porter square. We got a small round wrought iron table with two chairs for the back porch for eating actual meals outside and two wooden chairs with a cute side table for relaxing with a drink on the front porch. Perfect.
After buying everything, we went for a beautiful run along the bike path and then ate some delicious burritoros on the back porch on our newly purchased furniture. A great evening.
Scared stiff
Sadly, the end of my easy first few weeks of residency will come to an abrupt end on Wednesday when I switch from lovely call free to q4 call (30 hour shifts every 4th day). I will also have a lot more responsibility. I’m excited but also terrified.
On another note, I am now another year older. Had a very nice birthday yesterday. Slept late, read Agatha Christie, went running and then met up with friends to see Transformers. Let’s point out that this was mostly done for my husband! But we all had a good time. Then Eddie and I drove out to Sudbury for a delicious sushi dinner with my parents followed by drinking of tasty beer while watching a ridiculous show on the life of people who show cats professionally. All in all, a great day.
Ah, fried food…
Yes, I’m in good old Mississippi again. We arrived yesterday around noon, and we’ve already managed to make ourselves feel ill with eating. On the way home from the airport, we stopped at Gus’s Fried Chicken. Man, I’m not generally a fan of fried food (my husband thinks this is heresy), but this fried chicken is amazing. It’s spicy and very crispy without much breading. Delicious.
For dinner, of course, we had to go to the buffet at one of the casino’s in Tunica. Thanks to the wonders of legal loopholes, the casinos are able to operate because they are actually located on the Mississippi river. This time we tried the buffet at the Grand. Because it was a Thursday night, it wasn’t too busy. This meant short lines, but less turnover for the food. Nonetheless, I was quite happy to munch on salad (gasp!), some strange mexican dish, crab rangoon, mashed potatoes, sweet potato pie and an assortment of desserts. Mmmm, tasty.
Time for our daily trip to Walmart!
