Ireland, Part 2

Monday, Eddie got to experience the thrill of driving on the left side of the road for the first time. We stopped off at Hertz to pick up our car. Amazingly, Ireland is one of the most dangerous countries in which to drive in the world. As a result, our credit card, which normally provides insurance when renting a car, does not have this coverage for a select few countries, Ireland among them. So, we paid 15 euros/day for the car and ~26 euros/day for the insurance. Phew. Obviously we only elected to have one driver and given my total inability to judge distance, Eddie was the obvious choice. He did an amazing job, and we started out on our trip across Ireland. Our first stop was the Rock of Cashel which is actually a very cool combo of a fort and cathedral:

Cashel

Gorgeous views of the Irish countryside. Notice the cows in the distance.

From there, we went on to the Castle of Cahir which was awesome because you got to explore almost all the rooms. If only our condo had a “murder hole” so that we could drop rocks on unsuspecting salesman as they tried to approach.

We finally arrived at our bed and breakfast around 8 pm and headed out for a quick dinner at the nearby Sailor’s Bar. This is the view for our dinner. Note that at this point it’s probably close to 9 pm and still full daylight.

Tuesday morning, we debated a good bit whether to check out the Ring of Kerry (a popular tourist destination) or the Dingle Peninsula (awesome name, but farther away). We ultimately ended up going with our host’s recommendation and driving around the Beara Peninsula which was absolutely gorgeous with amazing views of both the ocean and mountains. This beauty was interspersed by moments of pure terror because apparently someone decided it would be fun to make very windy and narrow roads, just wide enough for 1 car, and then set the speed limit at 80 kmh. Luckily, Eddie was driving, and I just let out frequent squeals of terror.

Anyone who knows me knows that I have love animals, so we frequently stopped to try to entice the cows and sheep to come closer. Apparently the cows loved me:

But the sheep were quite fearful. Here is one running away from us:

Here’s one example of some of the amazing views.

Notice the crazy winding road:

Unfortunately, I’ve been rather sick for this entire vacation so I haven’t been able to get much running in. I’m actually starting to feel better, but I’m left with this horrible hacking cough. Lovely.

More pet options

On Tuesday, we went to San Diego’s Wild Animal Park which apparently used to be a breeding area for the San Diego zoo but now houses animals in a more naturalistic setting. Needless to say, it was awesome. My favoirte was the cool shows where we got to see a bunch of the animals close up. Check out these cool pictures.
1. Caracal–how come this animal walks on a leash but Spenser won’t??

2. Lions–look, they sleep in the sun, just like Spenser

3. Rhino–another animal that enjoys sleeping in the sun

4. Hedgehog–seriously, super cute the way he can roll up in a ball

My next pet

After a visit to the San Diego zoo, here are my top picks for my next pet (not listed in any particular order). Sadly, there are no big cats pictured because they are not very photogenic. Silly animals. And have no fear, Spenser would obviously stay and simply rule over whatever animal we got.

Vacation is awesome

I’m almost at the end of my week-long vacation, and I have to say that it has been wonderful.  I have managed to fit in an impressive amount of eating, sleeping, running, watching TV, sleeping, reading, petting my cat, sleeping, talking to my husband, and just generally enjoying life.  I spent most of my vacation at home just catching up on sleep and relaxing, but we did take one brief trip to Western Mass to visit a friend from med school (and eat more good food!).  Saturday we managed to drag ourselves out of bed around 9 am and finally leave the driveway around 11:15.  We made it out to Wilbraham (home of Friendly’s!) by 1 pm.  We spent most of the afternoon hanging out with my friend and playing Rockband.  Good times.  We left around 4 pm to drive up to our hotel in Northampton.  Due to some unforseen traffic (big accident on I-91, I guess), it took us almost 2 hours to travel 25 miles.  Fortunately, we managed to entertain ourselves by playing 20 questions.  Here are just some of animals we managed to guess: kangaroo, jelly fish, butterfly, ant, sloth, human, zebra, parrot, brontosaurus, manatee, crocodile…

Anyway, when we finally made it to Northampton, we checked into our lovely hotel, the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center.  Thanks to priceline once again for getting us a fabulous deal!  You know the hotel will be a little sketchy when this is the picture on their website:

Thankfully, the inside was much nicer looking:

After we checked in, we quickly changed into running clothes and headed over to the Norwottuck Rail Trail for a gorgeous evening run.  Here’s a picture of the trail taken from their website during a sunny afternoon.  It was even prettier when we ran it.

Of course, after that arduous work out, we needed to properly refuel, so we headed over to the Eastside Grill for an absolutely fabulous dinner.  Eddie had the blackened ribeye, and I had the scallops with a crab and blue cheese fondue.  If you are ever in Northampton, I highly recommend this restaurant.  After thoroughly stuffing ourselves, we headed over to Amherst to check out the Moan and Dove, a very highly rated beer bar.  Yes, my husband specifically chose Northampton as our vacation destination so that we could check out this bar.  Don’t even ask.  I have to say that I was not that impressed.  Perhaps because the many college kids made me feel old.  Or perhaps I was just too full from our excellent dinner to appreciate the two beers I tried.

Anyway, my favorite part of the vacation came Sunday afternoon.  We stopped at a local dairy farm, Flayvors of Cook Farm, to eat ice cream and hang out with the cows.  As you may have gathered from the rest of this blog, I am somewhat obsessed with animals, so I really enjoyed seeing all the cows, not to mention the cat wandering around.  We took some very amusing pictures on Eddie’s cell phone, but they become very small blurry images when I try to post them here.  :(

On another note, last week was my first official build up week in preparation for half marathon training.  My goal was: 3, 2, 3, 2 for a total of 10 miles.  I actually ran: 2, 3, 3.9, 2.7 for a total of 11.6.  Excellent.  I’m trying to get my training log to automatically post my most recent runs on this website, but so far I’m not technically savvy enough to do it.  Anyone out there have experience getting runningahead.com to work with the widgets on wordpress??

10K

Vacation continues to go very well.  Had a fantastic time at Topsfield fair with my dad and Eddie.  It’s definitely a sign of age, though, when I’ve had enough after about 3 hours, and I don’t go on any of the rides or do any of the games.  Luckily, I can still eat my fair share of disgusting food.  Over the course of three hours, I managed to consume:  corn on the cob dipped in butter, 1/2 of an italian sausage, pretzels with dip, fried dough, donuts dipped in apple cider, and part of a fried onion.  Delicious.  After all that, I wanted to go for a run when I got home,  but I was trying to take it easy before my race today so instead I went for a beautiful bike ride along the river.  I should start bringing my camera with me and take some pictures.

In addition to all the eating at the fair, we saw the giant pumpkin (world record breaking at over 1600 lbs), a vast assortment of ducks, chickens, rabbits, cavies, pigs, sheep, and cows (can you tell I like animals?), the state police K9 unit (both cute and terrifying) and the beginning of the Mrs. Essex County Pageant!  A great day.  I promise pictures soon.

Today was the Tufts Health Plan 10K for women.  This was supposed to be my goal race that I trained for all summer, but sadly residency and a nasty bronchitis severely limited my training, so I went there feeling vastly underprepared.  Of course, I’ve run 6.2 miles plenty of times, but I’ve never tried to sustain a fast pace for that long.  During both my marathon and half marathon, my only goal was to finish, so this was a very different experience for me.  It was a perfect day for it, cool and overcast.  The race didn’t start until noon, but I had to get there early to pick up my race packet.  Thankfully, Eddie came to cheer me along and keep me company while I waited for the race to start.  Before the race, we were wandering around and ran into one of Eddie’s friends, Parker, and his wife Alison.  They’re both amazing runners and do some writing for various running publications.  They were both covering the race today so we got to hang out with them near the press tent and catch a glimpse of Deena Kastor and Katie McGregor who went on to come in first and second in a ridiculous 32:01 and 32:41.  That’s a little over a 5 minute mile!

The race itself was pretty well organized, although the course was a challenge because it involved several tight turns which often caused back ups so it was hard to maintain a consistent pace.  It was very cool to run a race with only women and to get a glimpse of the elite runners.  My goal was to finish in under an hour by running the following splits: 9:40, 9:40, 9:30, 9:30, 9:20, 9:20.  Luckily, the course was along the Charles River which ensured a cool breeze with very few hills.  The first miles went well.  I ran the first one in 9:44 and then sped up to 9:30 for the second mile.  By around mile 3, I was starting to feel tired, but still not too bad yet.  By mile 4, I was exhausted, but kept reminding myself that if I could run the last 2.2 miles of a marathon, I could certainly run the next 2.2 miles of this race.  I ran miles 3 and 4 in 9:32 and 9:35, respectively.  Miles 5 and 6 were a haze for me, but I managed them in 9:25 and 9:02 to come in just under my goal at 59:46!  I was very pleased with this time, especially given my lack of training.  Pictures to come soon!

Curses

I really seem to have trouble updating this regularly.  I always think about stuff to post but then somehow life is too busy, and I never get around to it.  Hopefully this will change since after tomorrow (my last night on call for this rotation!) life should get much easier.  I’m certainly looking forward to having more free time and more time for running.  This weekend I had both Saturday and (gasp!) Sunday off, and I was really looking forward to getting in some good runs, but I woke up post-call on Friday with a nasty cold so I was forced to take it easy.  I spent a large part of Saturday in a hazy sleep, but I did manage to squeeze in a short run today.  We’re also coming up on the racing season.  I’m on back up call for the next few weeks so I can’t seriously commit to any races, but I’m hoping to do the Komen 5K and the Samaritans 5K in the next few weeks.  Should be fun!

Went out to visit my parents tonight and had a lot of fun talking to them, eating good food and playing with Julie their new dog.  Also had a wonderful time this morning sitting on the front porch with Spenser and enjoying the outdoors.  Being outdoors on a nice day really means a lot to me.

A dream come true

Anyone who knows or reads this blog knows that I am a little bit crazy about animals.  So, you can imagine my great glee when my parents got two Cavalier King Charles puppies.  They are ridiculously cute!

Don’t let the sleeping pictures fool you, they are maniacs!

What we do to our pets…

ocky

Just for the record, let’s point out that I would never purchase such an outfit (not that there’s anything wrong with that!) but since Mark and Susan were moving and didn’t want to take this outfit with them, Eddie and I volunteered to take it off their hands.  Ocky obviously tolerates this better than Spenser:

Spenser

Don’t you wish you could dress up as a princess?  Heaven help out children when we finally have them!

On another note, it is Eddie and my 3 year anniversary today.  That’s 3 years of marriage and 9 years of dating!  Of course, that’s nothing to Mark and Susan’s ten years of marriage, but we’re getting up there.  :)   We’re exchanging cards tonight and officially celebrating this weekend since Eddie is attending a tennis clinic tonight and I’m preparing for a new rotation.

Also, I’m having a great time watching the Seinfeld season 8 that Eddie got me for my birthday.  It’s hilarious.  I used to really hate Seinfeld, but Eddie has somehow changed my mind and now I can’t turn it off.

Of course, the best birthday present of all is that my parents finally got a dog!!!  So exciting.  Ever since we put our beloved black lab to sleep 3.5 years ago, I’ve been trying to convince them to get another dog.  This is mostly for selfish reasons.  It’s not that I don’t love Spenser (as all my rambling about him must attest), but I grew up with dogs and I miss having one.  I’ve spent a while trying to convince Eddie that we should get a dog but I had to succumb to his argument that we should wait until we have a big yard.  So, I figure my parents getting a job is the next best thing.  My parents have opted to get a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, which is a very long name for a pretty small dog, but I think this dog will be great for my parents.  They are going to pick it up in a week and a half!

Pictures!

I’ve decided that my blog needs more pictures.  Pictures make everything more fun.  And what better way to add pictures to my blog than to document the extreme cuteness of my cat.  My cat’s name is Spenser, and Eddie and I are slightly crazy about him, to say the least.  We adopted him from the Animal Rescue League when he was 1 year old.  Here he is the day we adopted him:

Spenser

Of course, I haven’t always been a cat person.  In fact, I grew up as a dog person, thanks to Maggy, the best dog in the world:

Maggy

In fact, I used to only like big dogs until I met another great dog.  Her name is Ocky and she loves drinking beer!  Ocky is part of Mark and Susan’s family, and they may be even crazier about her than we are about Spenser.  They threw her a doggy birthday party.  Sadly, wordpress does not seem to like Ocky becaues it won’t let me upload pictures of her!  Very bizarre.

Anyway, back to the story of Spenser’s life.  When we adopted him, he had only been in the shelter a few days, and he had the unfortunate name of “Miracle.”  Of course, we quickly gave him his true name.  We quickly discovered that Spenser like three things:  playing, stealing water from our glass, and sleeping in strange positions.  Here he is in his favorite past times:

Spenser flying through the air

I would like everyone to note my extreme control in posting pictures of Spenser.  We have no fewer than 232 pictures of him, all of which are ridiculously cute.
