San Diego Rocks

We got a late start on Friday because we had some issues with the shower in our room so we didn’t get to the zoo until ~11 am. The San Diego zoo is pretty ridiculous. It seems to be especially designed for lazy people–there are several buses that go around the zoo, not to mention a ski lift type thing. Of course, we gave right into our lazy side and took the bus around to get an idea of the layout. After that exhausting journey, we decided to grab lunch. Eddie found a great taqueria down the street called Mama Testa’s where I got to sample avocado and mashed potato tacos. Excellent. We spent the rest of the day at the zoo, this time toughing it out and seeing the animals on foot. I think my favorites were the orangutans and siamangs.

We got back to the hotel around 5 pm and managed to squeeze in a short run before it got dark. Then we had an amazing dinner at O’Brien’s Pub. We happily discovered that they were having a special Russian River Brewing Company event so we got to try a ton of great beers. Thankfully, you can order 5 ounces pours, otherwise we would have quickly been on the floor. As far as I can remember, we tried Pliny the Elder, Damnation, Blind Pig IPA, Happy Hops, Russian River Porter, Russian River IPA, and Marin White Knuckle Double IPA. We also discovered that Californians are much friendlier than Bostonians. I know, very surprising. We had two separate people offer to let us try their food. And I have to put in a good word for the Brewer’s Plate, which included a delicious mix of sausage, cheese and fruit.

This morning, Eddie dragged me out of bed around 9 am for a run around Mission Bay. It was gorgeous! What a difference compared with running in the ice and slush of Boston. After our run, we enjoyed sitting on the grass and eating oranges while looking out over the bay. We then had a very interesting lunch at Convoy Noodle House. I generally love Vietnamese noodle soups, but I wasn’t quite prepared for the beef soup I got which seemed to have some very odd beef parts in it–not quite sure what they were, but I could definitely identify arteries, veins and intestine. Guess I’m not adventurous enough.

Luckily, I managed to quickly forget this lunch with our excellent experience at Lost Abbey’s tasting. They normally charge $4 for a flight of four but because it was our first time there, we paid $4 for as many 5 ounce samples as we wanted. I think our bartender was trying to get us to try them all, but that would have been quite a challenge. We limited ourselves to Avant Garde, Red Barn, Lost and Found, Ten Commandments, Serpent’s Stout, Duck Duck Gooze, Moonlit Sessions Lager, Wipeout IPA, and Hop 15. Phew. My favorites were Ten Commandments, Hop 15 and Serpent’s Stout.

From there, we headed downtown to check out the Gas Lamp District and enjoy delicious French food at Cafe Chloe. Interesting how our vacation seems to revolve almost entirely around eating and drinking… Luckily, we’re keeping up with our running to balance things out.

Vacation begins

My vacation officially started on Wednesday, January 28th at 8 am when I finished my overnight ED shift. Of course, I celebrated the start of my vacation with a 7 hour nap. I managed to drag myself out of bed at 4 pm to run but was thwarted by the sleet/rain that had coated everything. Instead, I spent a lovely hour shoveling the driveway before heading off to a dinner meeting with delicious pizza from Upper Crust. I stuffed myself and then headed over to Orleans for trivia night. Our team got crushed (4th from last), but we had a very nice time. I woke up Thursday morning and did some laundry and started packing before taking Spenser off to “camp.” Managed to squeeze in an afternoon run before finishing packing and heading to the airport to catch our flight to San Diego.

I was very pleased that we got to fly Jet Blue because they have little TVs at every seat, free luggage (can’t believe that’s now a perk), and unlimited free snacks. Excellent. We were initially disappointed to hear that our flight was delayed but quickly overcame that with delcious beer at Boston Beer Works. Not a bad way to start vacation. And then our flight actually left pretty close to on-time. I spent the first half of the flight flipping through channels and enjoying my Dunkin’ Donuts coffee. Despite the coffee, I managed to spend the second half of the flight comfortably asleep.

We landed around 8:40 pm California time and set out to pick up our glorious Chevy Impala. We even managed to bring our GPS unit with us so we had no trouble getting around. We spotted a Target on the way to our hotel and stopped in for some supplies (cooler, yogurt, bagels, soda). From there, we hit In-N-Out burger. Eddie always raves about this place, but I don’t remember being that impressed from my last visit there. However, this time I absolutely loved it. Probably because I was starving, but it was delicious none-the-less. Then we hopped back in our cool rental car to check in at Four Points by Sheraton. Once again, we have to thank Priceline for an awesome hotel pick. We’re paying $50/night for free parking, free internet, a pool, giant room, mini fridge and microwave. Awesome.

And I just have to comment briefly on the ridiculous assortment of technology we have with us: 2 laptops, 2 GPS watches, 1 GPS car unit, 2 cell phones, a camera, and 2 mp3 players. Ridiculous.

Boredom vs. sheer terror

As a second year resident, I spend a lot of time by myself at community hospitals. These nights on call vary greatly. For example, last night was composed of many hours of pure boredom. I’m sure that I could have been doing something very productive with my time, but mostly I tried to figure out how I could screw around. I wasn’t wholly unproductive, though. I did manage to do two physicals on kids in the psych unit, place an IV in a kid on the floor, help out the intern in the ED, read through two issues of Peds in Review, send lots of work-related emails and even take a nap. Guess I really can’t complain.

On the other hand, some nights on call consist of me running around like a chicken with its head cut off. Not a pretty image. I think I would really prefer a happy medium…
