Slacker

Sometimes I think the amount I write on this varies proportionally with how much I’m working out. This makes sense on two levels. First, when I’m working out a lot, this often correlates with more free time. And second, I think I’m more likely to write when I feel proud about my working out. Obviously, this all a way of saying that I haven’t been working out that much. I think I’m feeling a little discouraged because my plantar fasciitis is better but still definitely present which means my hope for doing a fall triathlon is rapidly diminishing. This then makes my daily workouts lack focus. Plus, I’ve somehow been busier at work, which certainly seems odd since my rotations have been easier than usual. The problem is that I end up bringing a lot of work home with me since part of being a second year resident is teaching. I’m sure as the year goes on, I’ll be able to do more and more of this without preparation, but at my current stage, most lectures I do require some background reading. Anyway, here is a summary for my past few weeks of workout:
Week of June 30th (vacation): biked 4 miles + swam 1000 meters; swam 1450 meters; biked 15 miles; biked 20 miles
Week of July 7th (preparing lots of lectures every night): swam 1000 meters; biked 6 miles + swam 1000 meters; biked 15 miles
Week of July 14th (still preparing lots of lectures): biked 5.5 miles; biked 6 miles; swam 1000 meters; swam 1000 meters
Week of July 21st (very busy in the evenings, and often at work quite late): swam 1000 meters; biked 11 miles

As you can see, I only managed 2 workout this week. Alas. Here’s how that happened. Monday I was on call. Tuesday I was post call and then met friend for drinks as soon as I woke up. Wednesday I got out of work late and then went for a long awaited visit with a friend who had just had a baby (!), Thursday I didn’t get home from work until 9 pm. Friday I was going to wake up early to work out but then overslept and was too tired and grumpy when I got home to workout. I definitely could have worked out on Friday but the other days it was pretty much impossible. Hopefully this week will go a little better. My husband can testify to my level of grumpiness on Friday night after not working out for 5 days straight. It was not a pretty sight…

On another note, I had a lovely weekend (except for a grumpy Friday night). Saturday I woke up quite early (for a weekend) so I could make it to the pool by 8 am for a quick swim so I could be at work by 9:30 am. I worked until 11:30 am and then headed over to the Hophead Throwdown which is a combination of ridiculously hoppy beers with ridiculous spicy food. Delicious. Eddie and I both came home from that and enjoyed a lovely afternoon nap. I woke up and did some much needed housework which included buying several supplies at Tags (best hardware store ever!) to fix the door to our porch which had come off the hinges. Luckily, we have this amazing book with great pictures on how to do common home repair jobs. While we had the toolbox out, we also finally hung a few more pictures.

We left around 7 pm to meet some friends for Shakespeare on the Common, which is a very cool free performance that Boston does every year outside on the Boston Common. It was a beautiful night and a fun performance to watch. We got home fairly late from that and then slept in Sunday morning. I finally managed to drag myself out of bed around 10:30 to go for a long and beautiful bike ride. I was trying to follow the path of one of my long runs from my marathon days, but couldn’t quite remember the route so got slightly lost. Had a good time nonetheless. Relaxed and had a tasty lunch of fancy cheese (thanks to my friend’s gift certificate to Formaggio) while I waited for Eddie to get back from playing tennis. Then we headed out to my parents for a visit and another yummy meal which included fresh corn from Verrill Farms. On the way home, we stopped by Pemberton Farms so I could spend my birthday gift certificate. I was extremely happy to get some flowering hanging plants for my porch. We even had time to install the hooks to hang the plants from and to finish repairing the porch door. After that, we fixed our vacuum cleaner which has been clogged ever since I attempted to vacuum the front porch. Overall a very productive and relaxing weekend. The best kind.

Back to work

I head back to work tomorrow–this time officially as a junior resident. But before I talk about that, I need to talk about the rest of our amazing vacation.

So, Saturday we had yet another delicious breakfast (pancakes with bacon inside them!) and then left for a long, beautiful (and challenging!) bike ride all the way to Jordan Pond House. Ironically, Jordan Pond House is famous for its popovers, but Eddie and I keep bringing picnic lunches so we have yet to try them. We had a brief afternoon rest before heading over to Atlantic Brewing Company for some beers and all-you-can-eat barbecue which Eddie took full advantage of.

Sunday we left relatively early for a great hike up Dorr Mountain. The book we had rated the hike as moderate to difficult, and I definitely have to agree. The first half was killer, but the rest was beautiful and relaxing. I especially liked walking along the Tarn where we could see tadpoles in various stages of morphing into frogs. We got back midafternoon and enjoyed reading in the sun before heading off for our sunset kayaking tour. We got to see a loon, cormorant, porpoises, and a seal! very cool. Also saw the fog slowly overtaking a small island. Overall a great experience.

We left right after breakfast Monday morning and arrived home to a very distraught kitty cat around 3 pm. An excellent vacation.

Acadia

Finally managed to officially get underway around noon yesterday after finishing packing, straightening up the condo, buying ice for the cooler (and iced coffee for me!) and getting gas. Had a brief stop over in Portsmouth NH to visit the Smuttynose brewery and eat sandwiches in our air conditioned car before buckling down for the long drive to Bar Harbor, ME. Actually, let me rephrase that. Eddie did most of the driving, and I took a lovely nap. Arrived in Bar Harbor around 6 pm and dropped our stuff at the bed and breakfast (Canterbury Cottage). Eddie went out for a short run, and I went for a long walk since my planar fasciitis is STILL bothering me. On my walk, managed to scope out a few bike rental places, find out wear the 4th of July celebration would be, find out the price for a day pass at the Y, and take in some beautiful ocean views.

We had dinner at a so-so restaurant, Rupununi’s, before exploring the shops and getting some delicious ice cream (peppermint stick with hot fudge sauce) at the Chocolate Emporium. I was exhausted from my long day of sitting (napping…) in the car and fell asleep relatively early.

I woke up this morning around 7:30 am and walked to one of the bike rental places to pick up my bike and reserve Eddie’s bike for tomorrow. Got back around 8:30 and had a lovely hot breakfast prepared by our hostess. Also got to meet their dogs, Melvin (a female black lab/poodle mix) and Ellie Mae (a small fluffy black and white dog–don’t know the breed). Set out for downtown (a few minutes walk) to watch the 4th of July parade which was excellent. Lots of dogs for me to pet plus a great deal of amusement watching the kids scramble to get all the free candy thrown from various people in the parade. Also was quite impressed by the Shriners fancy go karts.

After the parade, we went to watch the famous lobster races. Sadly, the lobster we bet on kept trying to go backwards and never even made it out of the starting gate! From there, we waited in line to get our lobster lunch. It was pretty cool to see them preparing the corn, mussels and lobsters in giant cookers. Sadly, the lobster cooker broke fairly early so there were some delays in getting enough lobster cooked. We were patient though and enjoyed some delicious food as a result. Finished up the afternoon with an amazing slice of cherry pie.

We walked back to the bed and breakfast and took a short break before driving to Acadia to hike Kebo Mtn. This was a gorgeous hike. Only about 2.5 miles, but pretty steep at parts with some amazing views. Plus the trail was essential deserted, and we got to eat some wild blueberries (not ripe yet!).

Got back around 5 and had a short rest before we headed out for our separate workout. Eddie went for a run, and I biked over the the Carriage Trails in Acadia and had a fabulous time biking around Witch Hole and Eagle Lake. Some great views and very peaceful. It took longer than I expected, and I didn’t get back until after 7. We tried to get pizza at Rosalie’s but the wait was too long so we ended up at the Lompoc Cafe, which turned out to be great. We sat outside on a beautiful patio and got to watch some of the other guests play bocce. Also had some great beers: Atlantic Brewing Company’s Island Ginger and Special Old Bitter, and an amazing hefeweizen by Franziskaner.

After that, we returned to the Chocolate Emporium but this time for a coffee heath bar cone. With ice cream in hand, we walked down to the harbor to watch the fireworks. An excellent day. Can’t wait for tomorrow.

Done with intern year!

Had an amazingly easy call on Sunday, although had to stay a little later than normal to orient the new juniors. Slept for most of the day, but then managed to get up for the last happy hour of this year. Then went to dinner at a friend’s house before coming home and literally passing out on the bed. Didn’t wake up until 10 am Tuesday morning! I love sleeping in!

Relaxed for part of the morning and then ran some errands. Was so exhausted by all that hard work that I had to take a nap. Woke up and biked over to the pool and swam for about 40 minutes. Spent about an hour fixing my bike once I got home and adding front and rear fenders to it. Watered all my plants and then helped Eddie make chicken-fried steak and mashed potatoes from scratch. Then relaxed and watched the most recent Batman video in preparation for the next one coming out in a few weeks.

Slept in again today. Reorganized my closet (always thrilling) and donated some old clothes. Spent most of the day working on a chapter for this handbook I signed up to help write. At times quite interesting to work on and at times painfully boring. Gave up on that around 4 pm and went to the library to get books for our vacation. Managed to find some great books on running plus a few Robert Parker books I haven’t read yet. Drove over to the pool for another 40 minutes of swimming. Then went to the grocery store to pick up food for our road trip which starts tomorrow. Met friends for dinner (my first experience at Chipotle), then spent the rest of the evening packing and working on that silly handbook.

Now it’s time to go to bed so we can get up early to start our drive to Bar Harbor. Can’t wait! Should be lots of good hiking, eating and sleeping.
