Up and down

Sometimes running is very perplexing.  Yesterday, on a whim, I decided to run long and managed 8 miles very comfortably despite the bitter cold and the biting wind along the river.  Today, I went out for an easy 3 miler and thought I would never make it to the end.  Hmmm.

On a positive note, I had a fabulous weekend.  Had a great call on Friday night thanks to the awesomeness of my senior resident.  We spent about half the night laughing hysterically about nothing (in between taking care of kids!) and still managed to get a decent amount of sleep.  Saturday morning, I got home from work around 10 am and had a nice 2 hour nap before heading over to Costco for an eye exam and to pick up some groceries.  Took another brief nap before cleaning up the condo and baking cookies in preparation for Eddie’s (almost) surprise party.  Sadly, Eddie figured it out, as he always does, but we still had a fabulous time.  Met some friends at Christopher’s for dinner and then came back to our place for dessert and drinks.  As a wonderful surprise, some of Eddie’s friends bought him Rock Band for his birthday.  This, of course, resulted in some hilarious karaoke along with some interesting renditions of various songs.

Spent much of yesterday sleeping, then had a great long run, followed by a good dinner and an evening of watching Karate Kid.  And thanks to my wonderful fellow residents, I even had today off.   It doesn’t get much better than that.

New rotation

I start a new rotation tomorrow.  I’m not particularly looking forward to it because it means I’m back on call again (I’ve been on back up for the past 2 weeks), and it means learning a whole new system.  Bah.  The past 2 weeks have been very nice and relaxing, and I’ve found that the less I do, the less I want to do.  That means that right about now, I don’t want to do anything at all!  Oh well, I’m sure it will be good to be busy again.

On a positive note, my running is going a little better lately.  Apparently my body successfully regenerated the necessary red blood cells.  I think I’ve finally recovered from my pulled hamstring from Thanksgiving so I’ve started adding some speedwork back into my training.  Last week I did a tempo run which was challenging but enjoyable.  Hopefully I’ll be able to keep this up even as my schedule becomes busier.

Slowing down

My past few runs have been depressingly slow and depressingly difficult.  It’s a bummer to feel like a run is very difficult and then get home and realize that despite my perceived exertion, I was running a measly 11 minute mile.  How is that possible?!  I don’t feel like I’m moving that slowly.  Perhaps my Forerunner has a glitch…  Actually, it’s also possible that giving up 1/10 of my blood (and presumably thus one tenth of my oxygen carrying capacity) to the Red Cross on Friday might be affecting my performance.  If that’s the case, I should feel completely back to normal within 2 weeks, at least that’s how long the Red Cross website says it takes to regenerate all my red blood cells.

Despite the fact that I feel like I’m moving so much slower, my running log says differently.  After coolrunning hatefully sold out to active.com, I switched to RunningAhead.com which beautifully allows me to plot my pace over the past few years.

Running log

Sadly, my skills with wordpress are limited, so I can’t quite do the graph justice, but you can see that my pace hasn’t changed much over the past year.  Interestingly, I did get faster around marathon time which just proves that running more leads to running faster.  And, you can kind of see that my pace this week is noticeably slower than the previous weeks.  Interesting, at least to me.
